Jane Forsyth wants a new life—far, far away from her cold mother and recently-buried father. Working as personal assistant to a wealthy recluse seems ideal: fresh air, beautiful surroundings on a remote Scottish island, and time to recover from the trauma of nursing her abusive father. But when she arrives at gloomy, ghost-ridden Cardrossan House she finds a family even more dysfunctional than her own.

Her employer, Sebastian Holt-Manning, is drowning in whiskey, his wife has left him, and he treats his only child, Emilia, as if she doesn’t exist. It’s only her budding relationship with the lonely, mercurial teenager that convinces Jane to stay. The neglected Emilia requires a friend—and who better than Jane to mentor her through the hazards of a distant mother and a cruel father.

When Mrs. Holt-Manning’s body is discovered on the banks of the Black Loch, Jane becomes obsessed with the clues she believes point to murder. With Emilia leading her deeper into the shadowy secrets of the family and servants, Jane pursues the elusive facts. But even the strength she used to survive her parents may not be enough to save her from the terrible truths she discovers on the shores of the dark water.

The SFR Brigade Showcase: Lost Friendship

SFRB-ShowcaseBanner

I’m taking part in the SFR Brigade Showcase once again. Please click here to discover the other participants in the showcase. This time I’m sharing a short except from my latest release, BLUE YONDER.

Isabel and Daniel were once the closest of friends. Until the death of Jacques, Isabel’s husband and Daniel’s best friend, caused an irreparable rift in their friendship. Daniel is getting ready to flee a dying planet, and has a huge favor to ask of the only thing he will regret leaving behind.

***

“Isabel,” he said, sighing. “You have to get off Earth sometime. Let’s go together. We’ll look out for each other. You know, just like old times. I don’t want to go without you. I told Jacques—”

“You told Jacques what?”

“Just that…if anything happened to him, he told me to…to take care of you. Make sure you were okay.”

“And when did he say this?”

Daniel wished he’d never mentioned it. “When he was ill.”

All traces of tears vanished. A small furrow had formed between her eyes. “Did you know he was going to kill himself?”

“No! He was preparing himself, in case we couldn’t get any more of the medicine. He was more worried about you than himself. He worried so much about—”

“The price of the medicine,” she finished for him. “He hated to see how hard I had to work to be able to afford it.”

Daniel shifted uncomfortably. None of this was particularly new. She couldn’t think that Jacques wouldn’t have been worried about dying. And what was a dying man to do, other than ask his best friend to look out for his wife when he was gone? Daniel had to look away from her accusing eyes. She didn’t, couldn’t know how he felt about her, had always felt about her, from the very first moment he’d seen her laughing in the sunlight, her hair tossed back, her laughter erupting over everything and everyone. And then Jacques saying, ‘I met her yesterday. Come meet her. I think I’m in love.’

“So, why didn’t you?” she said flatly. “Why didn’t you take care of me? Why didn’t you make sure I was okay?”

“That’s not fair. I came around. I gave you money. I paid for the funeral.” Daniel backed away a few steps, but Isabel advanced.

She prodded a hard finger in his chest. “And then one day, no more Daniel. Our years of friendship. Gone. When I thought that I  might die of loneliness and grief, where were you?”

*****

Face mask firmly affixed, Daniel Morneau strolled beneath the crumbling edifice of the Acropolis. The warm glow of sunset had turned Athens golden, and the gusty winds had blown the usual polluted haze out to sea. High above the Acropolis, a comet streaked its way across the sky. How many times had the ancients treated each appearance of this comet as a sign of the end of times? This time, though, it was. The end of the world was no longer nigh. It was on them.

Daniel walked on, in no particular hurry. His day, which had started with his very last backgammon battle with his old friend, Stratos, was drawing to a close. One last payment to pick up, then he would visit some favorite places for the last time. Say his final good-byes to the city and the planet. And to Isabel.

He turned down an alley, listening to the distant booms of spaceships being slingshot out of Piraeus Space Port. The ships were all headed for Lunar Base where their occupants would be loaded onto massive arc ships and dispersed throughout the far-flung colonies. He’d be heading out himself soon into that great blue yonder. Everything was arranged. ‘Next week,’ Vangelis had said.

Daniel didn’t have to worry about a thing, didn’t have to concern himself with the swirling rumors. People were saying there wasn’t going to be enough time and ships for everybody. What would the dictator do with those left behind? Kill them? Probably. Daniel shrugged. His place on an outward-bound ship was assured. He’d earned it, and he didn’t have it in him any longer to worry about anyone else. Except Isabel.
